Contemplation
Of course the colors in this scene were incredible, but sometimes I just prefer the simple shapes and tones of monochrome. Another photographer was busy contemplating the scene, rather than shooting, so he became the unknowing subject of this image.
Moonset-Zabriski Point
I arrived early at Zabriski Point in Death Valley to catch the sunrise, but instead managed to catch the moon just setting over the Panamint Mountains in the west and the eroded hills below the lookout illuminated beautifully by the pre-dawn twilight.
Watching the Detective
I first shot a quick version of this formation for reference on a casual trip to JoshuaTree. The light and the sky were all wrong that first time, but I loved the shape of this formation enough to try again on two subsequent trips.. finally getting the background just as I wanted it on the third try. The odd shadows on the rock suggested the title, and I just couldn’t get it out of my mind.

Thunderstorm at Delicate Arch, Moab
Canyon Fairyland
I found the billowing clouds of a building thunderstorm growing behind this especially interesting spot in Bryce Canyon in late September, creating a fantasy scene of rocks and sky.
The Monster
The remains of this Bristlecone Pine found high in California's White Mountains (east of the Sierra) always remind me of a multi-legged monster frozen in time. It has probably been sitting here in this exact way for hundreds of years.
Ancient Guardian
Probably the most interestingly shaped and textured tree I have ever photographed, residing for several thousand years in a grove at the Bristlecone Forest, California's White Mountains.
Evening Meadow, Yosemite
Some deer were kind enough to stand still for me while I was photographing Half Dome in the evening light at Yosemite National Park.

The Rock Eagle
Someone saw fit to enhance the already uncanny resemblance of this odd granite rock to an eagle's head. I drove by this "natural sculpture" for years until one day I had both my camera gear and an interesting sky to work with, so decided to stop and finally get it off my list of sites to shoot.
Bristlecone Study #2
Bristlecone Pines typically have both living and long dead sections, especially the really old ones like those in the White Mountains of California.
Point Cabrillo Lighthouse
This picturesque and well preserved little lighthouse stands on cliffs above the Pacific, near the little town of Mendocino, in northern California.

The wood of these ancient trees reveals all the character and texture from thousands of years of existence.
Pictographs-Canyon de Chelly
One of the many examples of Navajo pictographs in Canyon de Chelly. The creators seem to have enjoyed using the shape and texture of the walls when considering the placement of their works.
